As a birth parent counselor I work with birth parents, and when I say birth parents, I'm talking about mothers who are pregnant and are either planning to place a child for adoption or are uncertain what they want to do.

As a birth parent counselor, my job is not exclusively to work with birth parents to place their child for adoption. Part of my job is to provide options counseling, and to present them with information about all their options, so that they can make an informed decision. And I am there to help them answer any questions or help them through that process, that decision-making process. If they decide they want to place their child for adoption, then I'm there and I'm experienced and am able to walk them through that process. However, if they decide that they want to parent … I've had individuals that say “I would like to parent but I don’t have the resources,” … that’s where I come in. And I try to give them information about what services are available, and what state aid is available for them, as a parent, as a single parent.

I have worked concurrently with birth parents who have opted to place their child for adoption, birth parents who have opted to parent their child. And these individuals that have opted to raise their child are teenagers, and I've worked with them in a school setting. So, I've seen these individuals be able to successfully parent their children and also continue their education. The most important thing is to collect/obtain information on all of your options so you can make an informed decision. And that’s really what my job is. You know, whatever option you choose, I'm there to give you additional information and additional support, so that you can place this child for adoption, or so you can parent this child successfully.
