Again! All ready? That layer of cells which makes up the lining of your uterus is breaking down. Here comes what looks like a lot of blood. You've started your period.

Your period is over. Hooray! But your brain recognizes that you didn't get pregnant last month and so it triggers the ovaries to try again. As your next batch of eggs starts to hatch, they produce hormones which begin to encourage the lining of the uterus to grow a new bed for the next possible occupant, wanted or not.

One of those eggs in your ovary is fat and ready to pop from the Dominant Follicle, which is pumping out the necessary hormones in anticipation of a pregnancy. Of course, these hormones make you feel like having sex, along with getting all that other stuff inside like your cervix, uterus and tubes ready for a pregnancy. You weren't planning to, but you say "yes", just as the egg explodes from the ovary and is scooped up by the tube and ushered toward the uterus. But it doesn't even get out of the tube before it's surrounded by several hundred thousand little sperm swimmers. And then it happens. Fertilization.

That old Dominant Follicle in the ovary hasn't given up yet . It still keeps pumping hormones hoping the fertilized egg will find its way into your uterus and lie down in the soft bed waiting in the lining.

And that's just what happens. That fertilized egg containing both Mom's and Dad's genetic codes finally manages to nestle in. Home at last. It taps in to a few of the blood vessels (though the bloods of Mom and baby do not mix), and in the morning, there's a spot of blood in your panties which you think is the beginning of the period you're expecting.

You started spotting a few days ago, so why hasn't your period started? But that's just a fleeting thought, and it's gone, because you know sometimes your periods are really long and sometimes really short. You are now 2 weeks pregnant, but a midwife or doctor will call it 4 weeks.

You went with your family to camp for the weekend, and forgot all about your period being late. But now it's really bugging you.

You really start to wonder if you're pregnant. You realize you're almost 2 weeks late for your period. If you buy a pregnancy test at the store, it might be positive; but it might not. But there's a second beating heart inside you already. (It started 21 days after conception which happened on your Day 14.) You go way out of your way to buy the test at a pharmacy you've never been to before.

You wake up nauseated, and throw up in the sink. Later that day, when you can bring yourself to try it, the test you bought on the sly is positive. You panic. Should you call your best friend? Should you tell your boyfriend? Should you tell your Mom? Should you call the Clinic? You really wig out and do nothing except throw up again. Maybe you'll take another test in a few more days, or next week. This can't be happening!
